چکیده
I review recent progress in numerical simulations of nite temperature quantum chromodynamics and discuss the status of some outstanding problems. Included is (1) a discussion of recent results determining the temperature of the \phase transition" in full QCD, (2) a scaling analysis of the Polyakov loop variable, leading to the determination of a constituent quark free energy, (3) studies of critical behavior near the phase transition in two-avor QCD, (4) a discussion of problems and new results in thermodynamic simulations with Wilson fermions, (5) recent results in pure gauge theory with a mixed fundamental/adjoint action, and (6) the nonperturbative determination of the equation of state with dynamical fermions included. Finally I mention brie BLOCKINy new developments in eorts to construct a phenomenology of deconnement and chiral symmetry restoration, namely (7) the dual superconducting model and (8) the instanton model.

We investigate the temperature dependence of the instanton content of gluon fields and their contribution to quark correlation using quenched lattice QCD and the cooling method. We found a suppression of the topological susceptibility at finite temperature, agreeing with the PCAC expectation at low temperature and enhanced suppression for temperatures at and above the deconfinement transition. ...

We investigate the temperature dependence of the instanton contents of gluon fields, using unquenched lattice QCD and the cooling method. The instanton size parameter deduced from the correlation function decreases from 0.44fm below the phase-transition temperature T c (≈ 150MeV) to 0.33fm at 1.3 T c. The instanton charge distribution is Poissonian above T c , but it deviates from the convolute...

We discuss recent progress in studies of QCD thermodynamics with almost physical light quark masses and a physical value of the strange quark mass. We summarize results on the transition temperature in QCD and analyze the relation between deconfinement and chiral symmetry restoration.

In principle, perturbation theory is unnecessary to solve QCD with lattice methods. Even the short distance calculations relating the lattice action to continuum actions could in principle be done by a → 0, V → ∞ brute force Monte Carlo calculations. In practise, perturbation theory has been essential to the progress of lattice methods. It is much easier and more powerful than Monte Carlo for s...

The finite temperature QCD transition for physical quark masses is a crossover. For smaller quark masses a first-order phase transition is expected. Using Symanzik improved gauge and stout improved fermion action for 2+1 flavour staggered QCD we give estimates/bounds for the phase line separating the first-order region from the crossover one. The calculations are carried out on two different la...
